Acne cyst treatment is similar to general acne treatments, with a few exceptions. It is especially important to treat cystic acne carefully since it has the highest potential of leaving scars.
What is cystic acne?
Cysts, which may also be called nodules, are hard bumps that appear below the skin. They usually last a long time and may be very painful. They are very different from both whiteheads and blackheads.
A whitehead is formed when a pore is completely blocked and bacteria is trapped inside. Blackheads, on the other hand, are formed when a pore is only partially blocked. This allows some of the dead cells and sebum to flow out.
Cysts are located completely below the skin and are generally full of pus. This makes them very sore and very slow to heal. You should never pop a cysts because of the increased risk of infection and future scarring.
Cystic acne is best treated by a dermatologist – not over the counter acne preparations. These types of treatments are only effective at the skin level and since cystic acne is located well below skin level, they cannot reach it.
What can be done?
Link all acne and skin problems, cystic acne treatments should always start with dietary changes. Eliminate all processed sugars, fast foods and greasy foods from your diet. Start eating fresh whole foods – fruits, vegetables and grains and drinking plenty of pure water. This will give your body the fuel it needs to support healthy skin.
Your dermatologist may also suggest prescription medications to handle your cystic acne. The most common treatment is Accutane.
If you decide to go with this type of treatment, be sure to do your research and discuss any side effects with your doctor. It’s worth notice that Accutane should never be used by pregnant women or any woman of child bearing years without taking special precautions.
